Ein Geburtstagsfest der Klänge! 40 Jahre feiert das von seiner homebase Amsterdam seit Urzeiten international agierende ICP, der Instant Composers Pool, 2007: als Formation mit bereits drei Generationen rund um die noch immer höchst aktiven Gründungsväter Misha Mengelberg und Han Bennink und als Konzept. ICP hat Spass und macht Spass. ICP schöpft aus der ganzen Bandbreite einfach "moderner" Musik: sei es Ellington oder Monk, Kurt Weill oder Webern, außereuropäische Musik, freie oder geleitete Improvisation und Komposition … all dies jenseits der anything-goes-Beliebigkeit. Dafür als serious fun.

"As much as any group anywhere, ICP encompasses a full range of modern musics: Ellington and Monk, Kurt Weill and European dance band music of a lost age, Webern and chamber music, South African kwela, free improvisation, conducted improvisation, interactive games, counterpoint and simultaneity, catchy melodies, pastel harmonies, order and built - in chaos. Post modern composers like to jump cut from one style to another: think Zorn. ICP's music drifts from one locus to another like the action in a dream, where the guiding intelligence may thwart rational progress. Some compositions feature glaring wrong notes or brazenly dumb ideas; no piece exists in a definitive state. Players have the option of making some will fully idiotic melody sound better or even worse. From one performance to the next, a piece may sound radically different." ICP's mix is perplexing in the best sense: the music doesn't give up its secrets on first hearing, or second, or third. It keeps you coming back. This is jazz / improvised music at its most deft and sophisticated."
