2004 war Manon-Liu Winter schon auf Initiative von "open music" erstmals zusammen mit dem Duo Jon Rose und Veryan Weston in Graz zu erleben. Eine Verbindung, die hielt (in der Zwischenzeit haben Winter und Rose immer wieder Konzerte, auch in Australien, der Heimat Jon Roses, gespielt.) 2009 steht nunmehr Winter selbst im Zentrum eines performing composers/composing performers-Porträts. Man kennt Manon-Liu Winter nebst ihrer Tätigkeit als Professorin für Klavier und Improvisation sowie Organisatorin der Tage für zeitgenössische Klaviermusik in Wien auch als international reüssierende Improvisatorin und Interpretin vor allem zeitgenössischer Literatur (z.B. 2006 CD-release mit Werken von Galina Ustwolskaja und Earle Brown). Seit 2002 tritt sie vermehrt auch als Komponistin und konzeptuell arbeitende Künstlerin in Erscheinung und ist bei Festivals wie Wien Modern, TonART Bern, turning sounds Warsaw, Komponistenforum Mittersill … zu hören. All diesen Facetten wird nunmehr bei "open music" Rechnung getragen. Manon-Liu Winter als Komponistin und Performerin - solo, in Duos und im Trio mit dem jungen australischen Meisterbassisten Clayton Thomas und dem nicht minder meisterlichen Kai Fagaschinski an der Klarinette.
Clayton Thomas is a double bassist and grass roots organiser working in the broad spectrum of improvised and experimental music on planet earth."I'm keenly interested in the relationship between electronic and acoustic music, and how their divergent histories create new language either by interaction or inference. I draw inspiration from creative music of all eras, happily learning from and engaging with improvisers, sound artists, composers and thinkers alive and kicking in the 21st century.
I have been inspired and pushed as a musician and collaborator by many great musicians, including Alexander Von Schlippenbach, Marilyn Crispell, Jon Rose, Makigami Koichi, Jim Denley, Peter Kowald, Wilber Morris, Henry Grimes and Jeff Henderson.
My current projects include Trio AUS with Johannes Bauer and Tony Buck, Creoles with Jim Denley, substation with Robin Fox the homeopaths with Kai Fagachinski and Morten Olsen, Invisible Cinema with Jean-Luc Guionnet, Axel Dorner and Tony Buck The Tim O'Dwyer Trio with Darren Moore and TOD, LVSXY with Clare Cooper, as well as collaborations with Werner Daffeldecker, Anthea Caddy, Magda Mayas, Manon-Liu Winter, Peter Brotzmann, Andy Moor, Christof Kurzmann, Burkhard Beins, Thomas Ankersmit, Ignatz Schick, Sherif and Christine Sehnoui, Chris Abrahams, Toby Delius, Wu Wei, Georg Grawe and DD Kern.
I am also the founder of the NOW now festival of improvised music and the leader of the 30 piece electro-acoustic ensemble The Splinter Orchestra. I'm currently living in Berlin, having a whale of a time."
The berlin-based clarinetist and composer/performer kai fagaschinski focuses on a subtle musicality of sound and noise phenomena. As an autodidact he has developed an anomalous language on his instrument. his music is rooted in abstractness, including increasingly an insidious expressivity and a pre-melodic quality.
